The Things They Carried

Physically, the men carry all the essential things necessary for war. They carry such things as marijuana, bug spray, knives, grenades, guns, ammo, etc. The author, O'Brien, describes what each man carries. For example, he explains what the medic carries (medical supplies). As opposed to the physical sense of what these men carry, they also carry things metaphorically. For example, Jimmy Cross holds onto and carries the fact that he is in love with Martha and she doesnt love him back. I think that this is very common in war, with people carrying stuff physically as well as metaphorically.

  1. The men in war carry alot with them. Physically they carry such things as marijuana, ummm thats illegal. They also carry chewing gum, which I dont think is too necessary. Other things are pretty essential though like bug repelent or a poncho. They carry alot mentally, or metaphorically. They carry alot on their minds. The men think about relationships they've had or are currently in and things they miss back home. They also carry the other men's weight with them. If one man is "falling off the horse," they help each other back on. They are moral boosters for each other. They do what they can to keep each other up because they are all they have out there.

  2. The men physically carry things that they need such as medical supplies and guns to protect them from the enemy. In their heads though the men carry grief and longing to be home or with someone that they love. For example, Ted Lavender carried photographs of someone that he loved. Physically he carried that but mentally he was carrying the burden of them. The burden meaning his longing to see his loved one again and imagining her how he remembered her.
